The Ground Here

Guadalupe County is caught between two cities, and that is the most important thing about working here. San Antonio pushes east through Schertz and Cibolo, Austin pushes south down the corridor, and in between sits farmland that has been worked for generations.

The river runs through the middle of it. Along the Guadalupe and its bottoms the soil is deep alluvial ground, some of the most productive in the region, and it opens out into blackland and post oak away from the water. Add the chain of lakes above Seguin and a single mile can take you from lakefront to row crop to raw pasture.

What that does to the work is specific. Land here is being divided rather than opened up. A place that ran as one operation for fifty years becomes three or four, and every one of those splits needs a boundary fence, an entrance, a drive and usually a water plan. That is a different job from clearing virgin brush, and it wants a different kind of attention - property lines matter here in a way they do not on a thousand contiguous acres.

The other half of it is recovery. Ground that has been leased out for grazing or hay and quietly let go will come back, but not on its own. It takes brush knocked back, the good grass given room, and a fence that will actually hold stock.
