Bandera calls itself the Cowboy Capital and the country backs it up. 191,495 acres in farms, 137,268 of them pasture, and 8,027 goats — a herd size that tells you how rough and brushy much of this ground is, because goats earn their keep where cattle cannot.
The Medina cuts through steep, broken hills and the ranches follow the valleys. Forty holdings here run past 1,000 acres.
More than anywhere else we work, access is the project. There are good tank sites and good pasture in this county that are simply unreachable until a road is cut to them, and the road is the part that takes the planning — where it climbs, where it drains, and whether a loaded truck can still use it in March.
It is also why we would rather walk a place here before quoting than price it off a map. Contour lines do not tell you what the last fifty yards are like.
