Blanco County carries more land under agriculture relative to its population than almost anywhere we work: 361,697 acres in farms, 299,402 of them pasture, and 15,356 cattle, spread across 776 operations in a county most people drive through in twenty minutes.

Sixty-four of those holdings run past 1,000 acres. The result is a lot of large, lightly populated property and not many contractors nearby equipped to work it properly.

The ground is limestone with the Pedernales cutting through it. That is good news for anyone who needs rock milled and bad news for anyone digging a tank without sealing it — the same stone that makes excellent road base will happily let a pond drain into itself.

It is the clearest example in the Hill Country of why the same two jobs, a road and a tank, need opposite instincts. One wants the rock. The other has to be protected from it.
